Great Beginner Low Whistle

I bought this Low F whistle with the intention of getting something sturdy and affordable to experiment with. The thing seems nearly indestructible. Going from a high whistle to a low whistle definitely takes some getting use to. Fingering is completely different and requires a completely different approach. It'll be frustrating for the first day or two. I transitioned fairly quickly though. It has a nice sound and I'm just really enjoying it so far. I'm glad someone is making an affordable option like this. It's nothing fancy but it works great and suits my needs well.

Full disclosure, I am very much a beginner. I'm giving a beginner's opinion. As a beginner I think this is a great whistle for getting started.

Very good

If you play tin whistle and bagpipes, you will find it very easy. You don't play this low whistle, you just deliver the sound that is trapped inside. A great pleasure.

A Good Whistle..... with reservations

Recently I bought a Low F whistle. I already had a Low G which I didn't like much a first because of its sound, but it has grown on me. I make my own low whistles which are very similar in construction using black plastic pipe and they have a very pure sound that I like.
The JD whistles have a bit of Chiff to the sound that I didn't like at first, but I have got to like it for some styles of music.
The G plays very easily with hardly any back pressure and the notes are very easy to get throughout at least two octaves.
The F is different. While it still has very little back pressure, it is very easy to over blow the bottom notes especially the bell note - the bottom F - and it easily ends up making a shrill shrieking noise if you over blow.
At first I thought it was a faulty whistle, but then I realised it was me. The amount of breath needed to get that bottom F note is significantly less than the G. Its a bit like the Treble Recorder which requires very delicate breath control. My own whistles are not like this and it took a significant amount of effort and discipline to get the notes without making it shriek. The other thing is the hole spacing which is a tad wide. I have big hands but I find at the moment the F is my limit for finger stretch. I hate the pipers grip, it just doesn't seem to give the same amount of tactile feel as using the finger tips. But that's not the fault of the whistle, it just is what it is and I will have to adjust if I want to play them.
Overall I would say the JD whistles are a good buy for anyone wanting to dabble in the low whistle world. Start with a G, they are good value for money, and they make a decent sound worthy of any musician I have heard. If you don't like plastic whistles you will pay a lot more for metal and to be honest I wonder if it would be worth the extra cost.
Here is a note for JD, I have made an A whistle in the same black pipe and it sounds great, I know an A is not technically a low whistle but why not have a go at making one and extend the product range, I bet it would sell.

pleased but waiting for a new F whistle

In the the last couple of weeks i ordered 3 whistles from Dominic. The low D is the biggest surprise.it is balanced as whistles go.it doesn't clog and it has mellow tone that is easy on the ear.The Eb has no obvious differences compared to the D but somehow is not as much fun to play, probably because it isn't in the most common key that we play in all day long. Now to the F.i am waiting for a replacement because the one i received had no E natural and a terrible 7th or Eb.When you played all holes open there was literally no difference to when you played all holes closed. That was a shocker!!!.i'm sure the replacement will be as good as the other two that i have purchased

Low whitle in key...

Low whitle in key F is amazing. I really enjoying to play with. Pros: Sound, its mellow and beutiful. Sounds great. Can be played not so loud, i can excercive in the evening. This can be also con to play on session, but the it can be pushed and the 2nd octave can be quite loud, when you need. Not breaking octaves like Dixon low whistle. In generaly it's more Easy to play nice, easy to achive and play in 2nd octave, also 3rd octave is possible. is possible Cons: New desingn need less air then the old, still i have to carefully plan when to breathe, also it's depends on song. In general, pipers grip is for me necsesary, i have not long fingers, i recomand this whistle, and also the service is perfect, shipping is fast and Communication is really nice Thank you
